Professional Hockey Returns to New Mexico with New ECHL Franchise
RIO RANCHO, N.M. – Excitement is building as professional hockey makes its comeback in New Mexico. The ECHL, a development league affiliated with the NHL and AHL, has awarded an expansion franchise to Rio Rancho, set to debut in the 2026-2027 season. The team, yet to be named, will host its games at the Rio Rancho Events Center. Fans can participate in a “Name the Team” contest to help determine the franchise’s official title.
This franchise marks the first professional hockey team in the state since the New Mexico Scorpions, who played from 1996 until their closure in 2009. The ownership group, REV Entertainment’s Sports Management division, brings experience from various professional sports, with President Sean Decker expressing enthusiasm about establishing the highest level of professional hockey in New Mexico’s history.
To ensure a successful launch, the NHL’s Dallas Stars will provide support in multiple aspects, including hockey operations, facilities, and equipment, although they are not expected to serve as the franchise’s affiliate. The Stars currently affiliate with an ECHL team in Boise, and future affiliations will be established based on geographic and strategic considerations.
The ECHL has a strong track record of player development, with 768 athletes having advanced to the NHL since its inception in 1988. Last season alone saw 16 players make the leap to the NHL. With New Mexico becoming the 31st franchise in the league, there’s optimism for a vibrant hockey culture to flourish in the area.
The New Mexico Pro Hockey Club aims to finalize its name by summer 2023, with coaching and operational staff anticipated to be hired before the 2026 season begins.
