Teen Shooting Suspects to Stay in Custody

Teenagers in Custody for Fatal Shooting After Altercation

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two teenagers have been charged in the shooting death of a man following a dispute early Sunday morning. The suspects, 18-year-olds Matthew Akugue and Isaiah Martinez, are accused of hunting down and shooting David Segura after he allegedly gave them a “dirty look” at a food truck.

Prosecutors reported that 17 shots were fired from the passenger side of Martinez’s vehicle as they followed Segura just blocks from where the altercation took place. They stated, “The defendant here said, ‘Let’s follow him. I’m going to kill him,’” indicating a premeditated intent to harm.

Police utilized ShotSpotter and the Real-Time Crime Center to track the suspects back to Martinez’s residence, where they were arrested. Martinez claimed he had no prior knowledge of Akugue’s intentions, a defense Judge Emeterio Rudolfo dismissed as unlikely given the circumstances.

Both teens remain in custody, with prosecutors working to upgrade the charges to murder. No future court date has been set. Authorities continue to address the alarming trend of youth violence in the community.
