Aggies Fall to Hilltoppers in Series Opener
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State baseball team suffered a setback on Friday night, losing 11-3 to Western Kentucky in their series opener at Presley Askew Field. The Aggies initially took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run homer by Steve Solorzano, who brought home Mitch Namie.
However, Western Kentucky quickly evened the score, responding with two runs in the second inning. The Hilltoppers then took control of the game in the third, highlighted by Austin Haller’s three-run homer that pushed their lead to 6-2. NM State had chances to close the gap, leaving runners in scoring position twice but failing to capitalize.
WKU continued their offensive dominance, adding runs with a solo homer in the fourth and two-run shots in the sixth and seventh innings, stretching their lead to 11-2. The Aggies managed to show some life in the ninth, with Joey Craig and Solorzano reaching base and Gianni Horvat driving in a run, but a critical double play and an out on the bases extinguished their comeback hopes.
Solorzano was the standout for NM State, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, marking his 15th multi-hit game of the season. Horvat also contributed with two hits and an RBI, but the team struggled overall, leaving 11 runners on base.
NM State utilized four pitchers throughout the game, with all contributing at least two innings of work. This performance marked just the third occasion this season where the Aggies scored three or fewer runs at home.
