WKU Baseball Gears Up for Series at New Mexico State
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western Kentucky University (WKU) Hilltoppers baseball team is set to face New Mexico State in a pivotal three-game series this weekend at Presley Askew Field. The series kicks off on Friday, May 9, with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
WKU enters the matchup boasting an impressive record of 38-10, including 14-7 in Conference USA (CUSA) play, following a successful weekend where they swept Louisiana Tech. The Hilltoppers have made history with their home performances, achieving the most wins in a single season at Nick Denes Field, surpassing the previous record of 27.
On the mound, WKU’s pitching staff has been a force, ranking second nationally with a 3.09 ERA. Notably, Drew Whalen and Jack Bennett are included on the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List, while Cal Higgins and Lucas Hartman are recognized on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List. Offensively, WKU leads CUSA with a .313 batting average, 110 doubles, and 106 stolen bases, positioning them among the top 25 nationally in these categories. Outfielder Ryan Wideman leads the conference with his remarkable .413 batting average, 81 hits, and 37 stolen bases.
The Hilltoppers will be aiming to close the gap in their all-time series against New Mexico State, which the Aggies lead 13-8. WKU previously defeated the Aggies in two of three encounters last season, including an elimination win in the CUSA Tournament.
New Mexico State, currently at 22-26 with a 10-10 CUSA record, comes off a challenging midweek loss to Texas Tech. The Aggies possess a .290 team batting average and struggle with a 7.47 ERA.
