Lobos Clinch Mountain West Title with Victory Over Nevada
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Lobos secured a significant victory on Tuesday night, defeating Nevada 71-67 and clinching a share of the Mountain West regular season title. This win also guarantees them the top seed in the upcoming league tournament.
Donovan Dent delivered an outstanding performance, leading the team with a game-high 33 points on an impressive 12-of-18 shooting. His explosive first half, which included 20 points, helped propel the Lobos to a narrow 41-38 lead at halftime. Nelly Junior Joseph fell just short of a double-double with 9 points and a dominant 15 rebounds.
The contest was tightly contested, featuring ten lead changes and eight ties. As the matchup intensified in the second half, the game began to mirror their previous encounter, which had gone to overtime. With just over three minutes left, Mustapha Amzil extended New Mexico’s lead to six with a crucial three-pointer, but Nevada’s Kobe Sanders narrowed the deficit to one point with a layup in the final moments. However, the Lobos maintained their composure, securing the win by converting their free throws down the stretch.
This victory also prevented Nevada head coach Steve Alford, a former UNM coach, from achieving his 700th career win. The Lobos currently hold a 16-3 conference record and an overall record of 24-6. They are set to face UNLV on Friday, aiming to continue their success in the league.
