New Mexico Mourns the Loss of Officer Timothy Ontiveros
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The state of New Mexico is in mourning following the tragic loss of Officer Timothy Ontiveros, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a traffic stop on Memorial Day. The Bloomfield Police Department reported that Ontiveros was shot multiple times, leading to a weeklong battle for his life.
Chief Phillip Francisco described Ontiveros, who served with the department for only six months, as a "kind, funny, and respectable" individual. He emphasized the deep bond shared among law enforcement, noting the immense grief felt by Ontiveros’ colleagues. “They’re like brothers to us, sometimes even closer to family,” Francisco stated.
As a mark of respect, the Bloomfield Police Department has lowered its flag to half-staff, and flower tributes have been placed by the community outside their precinct. Mayor Cynthia Atencio highlighted the significance of remembering Ontiveros for his dedication to serving the community, stating, “This doesn’t happen in our small town, and we don’t want people to forget.”
On Sunday evening, an emotional procession escorted Ontiveros’ body from the hospital for an autopsy. A community tribute is set for Tuesday, as officers from Bloomfield and beyond honor his memory on the journey through the Four Corners.
