A Wisconsin man, Demetric D. Scott, 52, has been charged with forging letters in an attempt to frame and deport Ramón Morales Reyes, a potential witness in Scott’s robbery case. The letters, purportedly from Morales Reyes, threatened violence against Donald Trump and criticized immigration policies. They were sent to various officials, including the Wisconsin Attorney General and federal immigration authorities, leading to Morales Reyes’s arrest on May 22.
The investigation revealed inconsistencies; Morales Reyes, 54, did not write or speak English fluently, and his handwriting differed from that of the letters. During questioning, Morales Reyes pointed to Scott as someone who might want to implicate him due to being robbed by Scott. Scott was already in jail awaiting trial for armed robbery and aggravated battery charges.
Further examination of phone records showed Scott had discussed plans to send letters that would lead to Morales Reyes’s arrest, believing it would prevent him from testifying. In a jail interview, Scott confessed to writing the letters, stating his aim was to ensure Morales Reyes could not testify against him. A search of Scott’s jail cell uncovered the materials used to write the letters.
Morales Reyes remains in ICE custody amid removal proceedings, despite his status as a victim of a crime. He is applying for a U-visa, which would allow him to stay in the U.S. while he assists in the legal process against Scott. The investigation continues, especially regarding the threats made in the letters, adding complexity to both men’s legal situations, particularly regarding Morales Reyes’ immigration status.
