New Mexico Lobos Hire Jason Eck as Head Football Coach
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico has announced the hiring of Jason Eck, previously the head coach at Idaho, to lead the Lobos’ football program. The announcement comes a day after Eck’s Vandals concluded their season in the FCS quarterfinals, finishing with a 10-4 record and appearing in the playoffs every year under his guidance.
Eck, 47, expressed excitement about his new role, stating, “I am truly humbled to be selected as the head coach of the New Mexico Lobos. I know that the university community, students, alumni, and Lobo Nation are eager for success, and I cannot wait to deliver that.”
His predecessor, Bronco Mendenhall, exited the program after a single season characterized by a 5-7 overall record and a 3-4 conference standing. Mendenhall took a position at Mountain West rival Utah State, prompting New Mexico’s search for a new leader.
New Mexico Athletic Director Fernando Lovo praised Eck’s track record, highlighting his ability to turn the Idaho program around through effective recruiting and building a strong team culture. Eck previously spent six seasons as an assistant coach at South Dakota State, where he served as offensive coordinator during the last three years. His coaching resume also includes stints at Montana State, Minnesota State, Western Illinois, Hampton, Ball State, and Winona State.
With Eck at the helm, the Lobos hope to revitalize their football program and bring a winning tradition back to Albuquerque. The New Mexico community is optimistic about the upcoming season and the potential for success under Eck’s leadership.
