Study Estimates Russia’s Troop Casualties in Ukraine War Approaching 1 Million

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has projected that Russia will surpass 1 million casualties in its ongoing war in Ukraine this summer. This staggering figure includes approximately 250,000 Russian soldiers killed and brings attention to the human toll of President Vladimir Putin’s military actions. Ukraine has also faced severe losses, with an estimated 400,000 casualties, including between 60,000 and 100,000 fatalities.

The anticipated milestone of over 1 million casualties is deemed a “stunning and grisly” statistic, reflecting Putin’s apparent disregard for Russian lives, as noted by CSIS. This number starkly contrasts with the casualties experienced in all Russian and Soviet wars since World War II, being five times greater. Current estimates by Western intelligence suggest that daily, around 1,000 Russian troops are either killed or injured.

The conflict ignited in earnest when Putin annexed Crimea in 2014 and escalated with the full-scale invasion launched in February 2022. Putin’s rationale for the invasion encompassed historically inaccurate claims about Ukraine’s sovereignty, alongside accusations of NATO threatening Russia’s borders. However, Russian forces faced unexpected setbacks, especially in their attempts to capture Kyiv, leading to a shift in military strategy.

Since then, the war has devolved into a brutal stalemate characterized by trench warfare. Russian tactics have focused on attrition, deploying large waves of troops with minimal regard for losses, in what is described as a “meat grinder” approach. The continuous and heavy toll on both sides underscores the devastating human cost of the conflict, which shows no signs of abating.
