WKU Baseball Opens C-USA Championship Against New Mexico State
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The WKU Hilltoppers baseball team gears up for the Conference USA Championship, starting with a first-round clash against New Mexico State. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, at 11:30 a.m. CT at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia. Fans can catch the action live on ESPN+ or listen on The Varsity Network.
WKU enters the tournament with a stellar record of 42-12 and 18-9 in C-USA, despite a recent setback against Jack State in their final series of the regular season. Remarkably, the Hilltoppers have recorded the most wins in a single season in program history, surpassing the previous best of 41 wins achieved in the 1980s. At home, they dominated with 30 of their victories, setting a new record for most home wins.
The team received several accolades following the regular season, with Ryan Wideman taking both C-USA Player and Newcomer of the Year honors, while Drew Whalen was named Pitcher of the Year. Head Coach Marc Rardin and Assistant Coach Dillon Napoleon also received Coach of the Year recognitions. Additionally, WKU boasted nine selections in the All-CUSA teams.
The Hilltoppers excelled on the mound, boasting a national second-best 3.28 ERA, and showcased offensive power with a .316 average and a record 119 stolen bases. Wideman led the team with impressive stats, including a .408 batting average and setting a new record for stolen bases in a season.
In their 25 encounters, New Mexico State leads the series 13-11 but WKU swept them earlier this season. The Aggies come into this match following a series defeat against Louisiana Tech, carrying a .289 batting average.
