Rookie Lexi Held Shines with Season-High 24 Points as Mercury Surge to 86-77 Victory Over Valkyries with 18-1 Run

In a thrilling matchup on Thursday night, the Phoenix Mercury rallied to defeat the Golden State Valkyries 86-77, thanks to a remarkable 18-1 run in the final minutes. Rookie Lexi Held led the Mercury with a season-high 24 points, while Satou Sabally contributed 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. The Mercury, who were trailing 76-68 with just over four minutes left, saw Held hit a crucial three-pointer to put them ahead 77-76 with 1:11 to go.

Golden State missed crucial free throws that allowed Sabally to rebound her own miss and convert a three-point play, extending the lead to 80-77. The Valkyries struggled to capitalize, with guard Veronica Burton missing a critical layup. Following a series of turnovers by Golden State, the Mercury secured their victory by making four consecutive free throws.

Phoenix’s victory improved their record to 6-3, making them 5-1 at home, marking the best start to a season in franchise history. Despite missing key starters Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas, the team showed resilience. Sami Whitcomb added nine points before fouling out.

For the Valkyries, Veronica Burton led the scoring with 16 points, while Temi Fagbenie recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Thornton, Cecilia Zandalasini, and Julie Vanloo each contributed 10 points.

Additionally, the game featured a memorable moment with Megan McConnell, sister of NBA player T.J. McConnell, wearing his Indiana Pacers jersey on the bench after suffering an injury, while he had shown support by wearing her Mercury jersey during the NBA Finals.
