Marquette Golden Eagles Gear Up for NCAA Tournament Opener Against New Mexico

Cleveland, OH – The Marquette University men’s basketball team, boasting a record of 23-10 (13-7 BIG EAST), is set to kick off its journey in the 2025 NCAA Tournament this Friday, March 21, against New Mexico (26-7, 17-3 MWC). The matchup, which will take place at Rocket Arena at 6:35 p.m. CT, sees the Golden Eagles entering as the #7 seed in the South Region, while the Lobos hold the #10 seed. The winner of this encounter will advance to face the victor of the Michigan State versus Bryant game on Sunday.

This year marks Marquette’s 37th appearance in the prestigious tournament, and it marks their fourth consecutive entry for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Golden Eagles have a storied tournament history, clinching the national championship in 1977 under legendary coach Al McGuire, and reaching the Sweet Sixteen 17 times, most recently in 2023-24.

Marquette’s previous encounter with New Mexico ended in a 75-68 defeat in 2013. Historically, the Golden Eagles have had mixed results as a #7 seed, holding a record of 1-2 in the tournament.

Key to Marquette’s recent success has been roster stability; they have not signed any NCAA Division I transfers since 2022-23, allowing for a consistent starting lineup. Senior guard Kam Jones has been remarkable, recently surpassing 2,000 career points, becoming only the second player in program history to reach that milestone.

As the Golden Eagles prepare for their quest for another NCAA title, they’ll lean on their strong senior class, known as "The Guardians," which has collectively contributed to an impressive record over their tenure. All eyes will be on Marquette as they aim to start the tournament on a high note against New Mexico.
