NM State Aggies Rally to Victory Against Kennesaw State
Las Cruces, N.M. – February 22, 2025 – In a thrilling showdown, the NM State women’s basketball team (15-12, 8-6 CUSA) overcame a seven-point deficit in the final minutes to secure a 61-57 victory against Kennesaw State (10-16, 5-10 CUSA). The Aggies’ comeback was highlighted by an impressive 11-0 run, with all points coming from their guards.
Molly Kaiser shone brightly, scoring 22 points which propelled her to third place on NM State’s all-time scoring list. This win also marked career victory number 240 for head coach Jody Adams, her 46th with the Aggies.
The game began with Fanta Gassama setting the tone through early offensive highlights. Despite a strong defensive effort from NM State, Kennesaw State’s Keyarah Berry kept the visitors competitive, ending the first quarter with a narrow lead.
Transitioning into the second quarter, NM State’s defense excelled, holding Kennesaw State to just eight points. Gassama’s rebounding established crucial second-chance scoring opportunities, while Sylena Peterson and Jaila Harding also contributed significantly in scoring. By halftime, the Aggies managed a slim 23-21 lead.
As the game progressed, each team fought fiercely for control, but vital contributions from Peterson, Harding, and Kaiser proved pivotal. In the final moments, Madi Gewirtz’s free throws and Kaiser’s perfect execution from the charity stripe sealed the win.
Notably, NM State tallied 26 points off Kennesaw State’s 21 turnovers and shot an impressive 23-for-26 from the free-throw line. This victory is the Aggies’ first win in a nail-biter decided by four or fewer points this season.
