New Mexico Heritage Rail Obtains Main Line Access for Santa Fe 2926

New Mexico Heritage Rail Expands Access for Historic Steam Locomotive

Albuquerque, NM — In a significant development for rail enthusiasts, the New Mexico Heritage Rail (NMHR) has secured expanded operational rights for the historic Santa Fe 2926 locomotive. This agreement, reached with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) on June 14, allows the steam engine to traverse 40 miles of state-owned trackage around Albuquerque, a substantial increase from the previous 2.7-mile limitation.

The expanded territory stretches approximately 20 miles in each direction from Albuquerque, encompassing routes from Bernalillo to Los Lunas. "This agreement allows us to bring an important piece of New Mexico railroad history to more communities along the corridor," expressed Mathew Casford, NMHR Vice President and Chief of Rail Operations. He praised NMDOT for their collaboration in preserving this national treasure.

While the expanded access permits only non-revenue deadhead moves, it opens access to eight additional commuter rail stations in central New Mexico, enhancing accessibility for local residents and visitors alike. Built in 1944 and restored over two decades, the Santa Fe 2926 is the largest operating 4-8-4 steam locomotive in North America, having returned to service in 2021.
