Prosecutor Unveils Disturbing Details of Assaults on Minnesota Legislators

Vance Boelter, 57, is accused of fatally shooting Minnesota state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, while injuring another couple early Saturday. Prosecutors described Boelter’s actions as predatory, alleging he stalked his victims and disguised himself as a law enforcement officer using a “hyper realistic” silicone mask, tactical vest, and body armor. After arriving at the Hoffmans’ home around 2 a.m. in an SUV marked with emergency lights and a “police” license plate, he knocked on their door, claiming to be the police and demanding access.

When the Hoffmans recognized him as an imposter, Boelter declared it a robbery and forced his way inside, fatally shooting both before moving on to other targets. His subsequent attacks were premeditated, with evidence revealing he maintained notebooks listing over 45 elected officials he had stalked. He then proceeded to the Brooklyn Park home of Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman, where he again engaged in gunfire, leading to her and her husband’s deaths. He fled the scene, discarding his disguise.

After a two-day manhunt, Boelter was arrested crawling in a field, where he cooperated with authorities. He faces numerous federal charges, including murder and stalking, with the murder charges potentially leading to life in prison or the death penalty. During his court appearance, he expressed that he could not afford legal representation, prompting the appointment of a federal defender. The next hearing is scheduled for June 27. Authorities described the series of shootings as “the stuff of nightmares,” highlighting the calculated nature of his attacks.
