U.K. Investigating Potential Connection Between Two Suspected Iranian State-Sponsored Plots

British authorities are investigating two potentially state-sponsored plots primarily involving Iranian nationals, with eight arrests made across the UK over the weekend. Seven of those arrested are Iranian, and three were detained under the 2023 National Security Act, allowing police to act against individuals associated with foreign powers.

The plots are deemed separate, yet officials are exploring if both were orchestrated by the same entity. Initial details emerged from the first plot, where five men aged 29 to 46—four of Iranian descent—were arrested under the Terrorism Act for allegedly preparing a terrorist act across various UK locations, including London and Manchester. A specific target was suggested, though no details were disclosed, and police are conducting a “fast-moving” investigation.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the ongoing operations as pivotal counter-state and counter-terrorism measures. Past incidents have shown Iranian nationals targeting UK-based Iranians, including attempts on journalists from the critical Iranian television network, Iran International, which moved to the US due to threats. A thwarted plot involving the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps aimed at harming journalists was revealed following an investigation, while another journalist was stabbed outside his London home in 2024, leading to charges against two Romanian men.

The UK has confronted 20 Iran-backed plots since early 2022, posing significant risks to British citizens and residents, as noted by Minister of State Dan Jarvis. He highlighted Iran’s strategy of targeting dissidents and media to suppress criticism. Additionally, there are concerns about potential threats to Jewish or Israeli targets, indicating a systematic pattern of intimidation orchestrated by the Iranian regime.
